Trillium Exchange Accepting Sign-ups

THL Marie l'Englois tells us about the next round of the Trillium Exschange, which is accepting sign-ups now!

Trillium Exchange starting soon!

What is the Trillium exchange? It's like a "secret santa" swap for Ealdormerean artisans. At the start of a new exchange, each participant fills out an online questionnaire about their activities, interests, and preferences, and is then assigned a recipient for whom they will craft something in the SCA art form of their choice. Each participant will also be assigned to a different participant as that person's recipient.

The survey for the next round is online now, and can be found at:

The first 30 people to fill out the survey will get into the exchange. The link will stop working after 30 responses. At that point the admins will match artisans with recipients, and crafting can begin!

The end date for this next exchange will be July 2nd, 2016. People can either mail their items to arrive before that date, or for those attending Trillies we will be setting up a time for an in-person exchange at Trillies as well. There will be three intermediate check-in points during the exchange, dropping out after the second checkin is not permitted. For everyone to receive a shiny, everyone must make a shiny! Materials cost for the item created is capped at $25, though use of “stash” materials is exempt and does not count towards costs.

You don't have to be an expert in your craft to participate. There are frequently laurels and absolute beginners participating side by side in the same exchange, along with every level of expertise in between. You can use an existing craft, or learn a new one, it's totally up to you!

Youth Activities on Hold in Ealdormere

[The following was posted to the Ealdormere webpage today;]

To the Good People of Ealdormere,

I received the following email (see below) from the Society Seneschal Master Antonio Giordano da Sicilia. The process for Canadians to complete a background check to ensure the safety of the children in the SCA is a very complicated and ongoing issue. To be clear, everyone agrees that the need for a background check to be completed is a valid and necessary measure. The issue revolves around using IntelliCorp, a US-based company, to conduct the background checks. IntelliCorp requires our Social Insurance Number be provided to them to complete a background check. Both Avacal and Ealdormere have been very clear in communicating to the Board of Directors that providing our Social Insurance Numbers across an international border is unacceptable and that most Canadians would be justifiably unwilling to do so.

Daytripping: Embracing the New

Someone let Graham Day behind the keyboard again. Won't somebody please think of the children? Actually, that's kind of what he's writing about today - Baby Scadians, those new to the kingdom, and what we can to do help them find their place among the good gentles of Ealdormere.  

Let me start by acknowledging a simple truth: We’re all geeks. All of us. You. Me. That guy over there. The woman standing to his left. All of us. We’re all geeks about something, and that’s not a bad thing. Being a geek just means there’s something that you’re into to the extent that you’ll gleefully rabbit on about it, unashamed, with wanton abandon. Some people are sports geeks, some people are book geeks, almost everyone in the SCA is on some level a history geek, or in the very least a camping geek.

Being a geek is a good thing.

Application Deadline Extension - President, SCA Inc.

Leslie Vaughn, President of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc., has announced that the SCA Board of Directors is continuing to accept applications for the position of President of the SCA Inc. until March 31st, 2016.  All applications received will be evaluated after March 31st, 2016.

The Board of Directors of the Society for Creative Anachronism, Inc. is currently accepting applications for the position of President of the SCA Inc. This is a position requiring approximately 10-20 hours per week and includes a stipend.

SCA Board Meeting in Pittsburgh, October 24, 2015

Mistress Arianna of Wynthrope reports on the SCA Board meeting held in the Debatable Lands on Oct. 24. This is an unofficial report; for the official report, see the Board meeting minutes that will be published at a later date on theSCA Newsletters site.
A quarterly meeting of the SCA’s Board of Directors is much like any other business meeting. The participants wear modern business clothing (some were in suits), they sit at a U-shaped table with the audience forming the fourth side of the square, and they operate under Robert’s Rules of Order with motions proposed, seconded, and approved with a rap of the chairman’s gavel.
Even the topics discussed might not seem out of place in a modern board room: finances, publications, approval of meeting minutes, and changes in procedure took up much of the day. Coffee and tea were served.
Of course, the big difference is that the topics all pertained to the SCA.

Unto the populace of Ealdormere comes these words from Her Royal Highess
Adrielle patroness of the Arts and Sciences, and QPT Wrangler, greetings.

Queens Prize Tournament is less than a month away and all are welcome. The
competition is geared toward getting people involved in the arts, and entry
is restricted to Novice Artisans - specifically those who have an AOA arts
award or less. The idea is to provide some mentorship for newer artisans by
the Crucible and Laurels. The entrants get some feedback and have the
opportunity to meet others who do similar stuff. It also is a great
opportunity for folks to hone their judging skills. Folks who just want to
see the cool stuff being made are also more than welcome to come out.

Due Dates for Kingdom A&S

Greetings unto the Populace of Ealdormere. Here are important dates for Spring Kingdom A&S. The Tournament to find the Kingdom A&S Champion will be held on March 19, 2016. More information TBA. February 27, 2016: All entries requiring a score, including Pentathlon entries, must be registered for the Kingdom A&S Tournament using the electronic form on February 27, 2016: Judges forms, found on, should be filled out to show willingness to volunteer to be a judge. March 5, 2016: Research papers due to be submitted to the KMoAS at March 12, 2016: Documentation for scored projects submitted electronically to KMoAS at If feedback on documentation is desired on a non-scored item it is recommended that documentation is submitted by April 7, 2016 to the KMoAS. March 12, 2016: Registered bardic, or other registered performance work, can be submitted electronically to for judging. March 15, 2016: Judges will be given documentation for items to be judged. Artisans can withdraw from pent or the scored tournament without penalty at any time. Novice, or display only pieces, may be submitted on the day of the Kingdom A&S tournament, however there may not be a set judging time for these items if they are not also registered in advance. Changes to Arts and Sciences in Ealdormere

Greetings unto the Populace of Ealdormere from your Kingdom Minister of Arts & Science, Baroness Lucia;

I am super pleased with the number of A&S competitions that are happening around the Kingdom. I am super excited about the upcoming A&S displays that are part of the Royal whims of Their Royal Majesties.

I am now announcing policy changes for Kingdom A&S after the very productive Kingdom A&S Moot. The biggest change is that I will be dropping the existing 5 categories. The most exciting change is the introduction of sponsored prizes. 

Please read over the rules below. They will also be put up on the A&S page, and incorporated into the A&S Policy document. I hope these rules reflect the wishes of the A&S community. Feedback and questions are welcome at or on the e-list.

Call for Applicants - Tournaments Illuminated Art Director

The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is seeking candidates for the position of Tournaments Illuminated Art Director. The current officer steps down in July, 2016, and in order to ensure a smooth transition, applications for the positions are now being accepted.

Tournaments Illuminated (TI) is the Society’s quarterly magazine that furthers research, education and ‘living history’ recreation in the field of pre-seventeenth century Western culture, with additional features unique to the SCA: humor, kingdom news, medieval travel destinations, museums of interest, and more.

Duties and responsibilities of the art director include:
  • layout of the magazine while adhering to our graphic standards on schedule;
  • maintaining contact with illustration and photography contributors
  • supplying TI-related supplementary materials for the SCA’s websites
The position requires a modest weekly time commitment, except prior to publication deadline when 30+ hours per week may be required. Qualifications for the Art Director position include expertise with magazine production, the ability to meet deadlines, and experience working with printers. Applicants need to have access to and experience with a computer running InDesign and the ability to export files to press-quality pdf format (if working on a PC – our printing vendor uses Macintosh, and our existing files are all Macintosh InDesign). Professional experience in a graphics environment and prior experience in an SCA chronicler position are desirable, but not required.   E-mail access is absolutely vital to the position, and while high-speed internet access is not required, it has proven to be very useful. Reasonable expenses are covered by the Corporation and may include: paper, printer cartridges, stamps, mailing expenses, and a post office box. You will be asked to submit an expense report, with receipts attached to receive reimbursement. The Art Director receives a small stipend from the SCA once an issue is complete.

The Theme of Their Highnesses Upcoming Reign Revealed!

Greetings Unto the Noble Populace of Ealdormere from Prince Quilliam and
Princess Domhnail!

With our Coronation Day fast approaching, We are issuing a missive to give
people a head start on the theme of our reign. As the season of the Viking
wanes, the sun is rising on the time of the Tudors. Through a spectacular
time warp, the autumn season is going to start at the Field of the Cloth of
Gold in the 1500s!

Some of you may remember a time, generations ago, when Domhnail the 1st was
a proud Saxon queen, who warred (mostly playfully) with a strong Norman
King. Several hundred years later, we look forward to having another Proud
Queen named Domhnail, who will be carrying the Fleur-de-lis of the French
. She will be reigning with a Strong English Tudor King, emblazoned
with the Rose of the Tudors. We are looking forward to a reign filled with
(mostly) friendly rivalry, as the people of Ealdormere establish once and
for all which Monarchy’s star shone the brightest.

Law Change: ref VI-100 VI-700, VI-701, VI-702 elimination of the office of Chirurgeon as required by B.O.D.and removal of references to it in Kingdom Law.
Policy Change: ref 1.6.1, 1.6.2, 1.6.3, 2.2.1 removal of Chirurgeons Fund as required by B.O.D. and reference to it in Kingdom Policy.
These changes were read into court without the customary posting and poling of populace opinions at the direction of the Society Seneschal in order to comply with directives issued by the B.O.D. that these changes take effect on or  before the 10th of August 2015 (A.S.50)

TRM then asked those Chirurgeons present to stand that they might be recognized for their service in the past and were joined by TRH in thanking them and encouraging them to continue their service in what ever manner the future may hold for such valued services.

New Event Registration Process

To ensure that all information required is submitted we have added a google form to the Event Registration page. Starting today. rather than sending an event flyer to the kingdom chronicler, event stewards will need to fill out this form. Please note that the form has certain fields that must be filled out. If you do not have that information ready when filling out the form, you will not be able to submit it.

Marshalate Reporting Update

Good day all,

I am pleased to announce that reporting for the Marshalate has gone electronic.

Thanks to the tireless effort put in by Liadin, Ealdormere Marshals can now do their reports quickly and easily at the following website:

This will be the first go around with the new reporting method so any constructive criticism will be appreciated ( You can use the Comments box on the form). There may be a few bugs to work out but it looks great at first glance.

Remember that Liadin has put a lot of time and effort to get this going and please thank her for it when you next see her.

Daytripping: It's a small world.

The Ealdormere Gazette's newest correspondent, Graham Day, writes a bit about his experiences at his first Pennsic in this installment of Daytripping. Daytripping will be an ongoing series by Graham, detailing his adventures in the SCA. Photos in this article are also by Graham.

So, no sh!#, there I was at Pennsic… because I’m told that’s how all of these stories start…  and I get a text from an old university buddy of mine, halfway across the world in Australia. He’s not a Scadian, so I say Australia rather than Lochac. What followed was an exchange that highlights just how small the world can be.

For ease’s sake, I’m going to summarize the conversation.

Deputy of Youth Policy – Applications Open

Deputy of Youth Policy to the Society Seneschal:

This Deputy position will communicate with Kingdom Seneschals and liaison with Kingdom Youth Officers in terms of the ever changing legal requirements in Youth Policies.  This Deputy is responsible for obtaining information regarding changes in laws in the various jurisdictions of the SCA as each state and province have specific laws in terms of background checks and mandated reporting requirements.This Deputy reports directly to the Society Seneschal.

This Deputy should have prior experience as a Seneschal and/or legal experience;  applicants need not have prior experience as a Youth Officer.Those interested in this position should  complete the form below.  The following documents (in PDF format) will be needed to complete the Application Form:

  • Letter of Intent
  • SCA CV (resume)
  • Mundane CV (resume)

Applications will be accepted from August 10, 2015 until September 30, 2015 at 12:00 pm (noon) EST.

Directors and Corporate Officers Meet & Greet at Battlemoor VI

How different is running a Corporation than running a Kingdom? How is it the same? How do they connect?

The Directors and Corporate Officers will be sponsoring a panel discussion at the upcoming at Battlemoor VI in the Kingdom of the Outlands to answer any questions the membership may have about the modern business of running the Society and its interaction with the game.

Panel Members will include: Director John Fulton (Duke John the Bearkiller), Director Paul Lancaster (Master Stephan of Durham), Corporate Treasurer Therese Hofheins (Mistress Kiara Loftus), and Society NMS Deputy Lynn Shirk (Master Bjorn Paulson).
This gathering will take place on Saturday, September 5, 2015 from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Town Hall. One and all are welcomed and encouraged to attend.

Memorial Shield Wall for SCA 50 Year Celebration

A project is underway to honour members of the Society who have passed on, as well as groups and events that have disappeared. As the project's website says:
A project to memorialize people, households, groups and events that are not around any longer but of whom we all have fond memories.
As we celebrate our Society completing its 50th year, we look around and see gaps. Dust to dust it is said, but “no one dies who lives within a heart” (Michael Longcor) and we want to share those who are lost to time but living in our hearts at this time. So, whether it is a person or some kind of entity (households, groups and events) that is no longer part of the fabric of our lives, the Shield Wall will be a highlight at the 50th Anniversary Celebration Event to share with the attendees.
Anyone who wishes to may create a standard size paper shield blank in any design that reminds THEM of the person, event, etc. It does not have to just be heraldry. It can be photos, toys, dolls, etc. We will take electronic submissions or you can mail your submission to our minions or you can get them to Indiana for the June 2016 event physically. We would appreciate you fill out the submission form so we can be sure to have room for your submission.
The shields would have a place of honor at 50 Year and be displayed for all to see.

Have you ever found yourself with more to pack at the end of Pennsic then you did when you set out from home, only to find that your vehicle seems to have shrunk? Is your kitchen area full of boxes of cereal, pasta, jars of peanut butter, and jugs of bottled water you can't remember buying?

Never fear! The annual Paladin's Pantry Food Drive is here to help by conveying your camp's extra food and drink to a local food bank. Just drop any unopened foodstuffs or beverages (no alcohol, please) at one of our handy collection points:

Update regarding land at Pennsic

A letter from the Deputy Mayor for Land at Pennsic 44:

After spending last weekend at Cooper’s Lake and looking at the situation there, several hard decisions were made for the 11,765 people preregistered for Pennsic.

No further condensing could be done on the 18 blocks that were seriously over-booked because most blocks could not sustain extra people without compromising the safety of the campers. The groups that had to be moved off their blocks due to this over-crowding were chosen based on the number of people needing to be moved. A total of 383 campers were over the limit in their block and we're relocated.

With 3 more storms forecast for this week, it would only get worse.

The blocks that were closed due to flooding added 91 campers to be moved due to their blocks closing (including the camps of the Mayor and Land1).

That made 474 campers for whom we needed to find another home, for this year ONLY. No seniority will be compromised! Tough decisions were made and we ask that you wait till you arrive and see the status of your block.

I will be available in the Great Hall during Land hours for anyone wishing to discuss this.

The Board of Directors is excited to announce the 2015 Fourth Quarter Board of Directors Meeting to take place in the Sylvan Kingdom of Aethelmearc on Saturday, October 24, 2015.

The location is The Embassy Suites, Pittsburg International Airport, 550 Cherryington Parkway
Corapolis, PA 15108.  Start time is 9:00 a.m. ET.

Modern clothing is requested.  All members and interested parties are encouraged to attend.

Pennsic Youth Marshaling

As you may be aware there has been some mundane law changes within the State of Pennsylvania with regards to working with youths and how this would affect the SCA, Pennsic and more specifically the Marshals of Ealdormere.

Our Kingdom Seneschal, Mistress Jocea, has contacted the Society Seneschal directly and he has confirmed that the Marshals of Ealdormere do not need to under take any new processes to carry out Youth Marshal activities. Please continue to follow current Society/ Pennsic guidelines.

So go to Pennsic, have fun, volunteer and continue to make Ealdormere look good.

Chirurgeonate to be Closed

                The decision has been made to close the Office of the Chirurgeonate as of August 10th, 2015.  The board and corporate officers want to extend their gratitude for ALL who have served our organization in this capacity in the past. To those who have provided feedback, questions, and worked to explore options for scopes of the office that would allow our organization to retain the office and maintain insurance coverage for the officers and our organization, many thanks as well.

Land Block and Road Closures for Pennsic 44

From the Mayor’s Office Regarding Campground Restrictions due to Weather Conditions

Be advised that these restrictions & closings only apply for PW44.

Due to abnormal rainfall this year some areas of Cooper’s Lake Campground are very wet and muddy (and have a high probability for vehicles becoming stuck). Due to that and potential complications of further rain, both before and during the event, the Mayor and the Land Staff are placing the following restrictions and closings into effect. See the list below to find out if your campsite is affected; on site look for Red Lines which will be painted around or within blocks denoting closed sections.

Powering Your CPAP at Pennsic

An increasing number of Society members are being prescribed CPAP machines, to help with their breathing at night. Using a CPAP machine at camping events like Pennsic can be problematic, since they require power that’s often not available in many camps. And since Pennsic is coming up very soon, this is an issue confronting many.
To assist with that, Master Phillip teaches a class at Pennsic on how to power your medical devices when away from commercial power. In order to help people acquire what they need before they actually get to Pennsic, he has uploaded his class handout here. (PDF file warning).
