Second Entry in Their Majesties' Bardic Competition

Their Majesties Ealdormere, Siegfried and Xristina, have challenged the people of Ealdormere to a bardic competition wherein they are to extol the virtues of a former Queen of the lupine lands.

The second entry was by TH Laird Colyne Stewart, who presented the following poem at Queen's Prize Tourney:

Her Royal Heritage
By TH Laird Colyne Steward, Lupine Bard, November AS 51 (2016)

My Queen has asked me to recite
Fair words about her forebears bright—
“My regal mothers, were they fierce,
And with sharp spears the foemen pierced?
Or were they kind and debonair,
With flowers in their braided hair?
And did they work with silk and thread,
Or were they bookish and well read?
Of horses did they know their way,
And could they lead the hounds that bay?
Oh tell me, poet, of my past,
And of my line, my mothers passed.”
“My fairest queen, hear now your lore,
So many others gone before,
Lo each of them were royal true,
And many were the things they’d do;
But there was one who did them all,
Who led her folk in field and hall,
With those of wolf and of the bear,
Met strong the tygre’s steely stare,
She rode her stead in battle’s hell,
And strode with spear and never fell.
She bled her blood, she worked her hands,
For betterment of all our lands.
With needle, thread, she knew her art,
And always giving from her heart,
She clothed so many ‘gainst the cold—
Yet, wait! For more there must be told!
Around her children laughing play,
While hounds, obedient, panting stay;
Within her rooms are piled tomes
Among her pins and fancy combs,
And red and yellow hair bound flowers,
From which she’s read in midnight hours.
So worthy she, so right and true,
A Pelican and Laurel too,
Countess, Duchess and Baroness,
Her name to you I will confess
‘Tis Adrielle, the Iron Queen,
Whose virtues I see in your mien.
Xristina, ruler, sovereign,
My duty now is duly done.”

During the reign of Siegfried II and Xristina, the people of Ealdormere were challenged to write a song, poem or story about one of the Queens of Ealdormere. I choose Her Grace, Adrielle Kerrec, who I feel epitomizes all that is noble within our Society. I wrote my poem as an amas, which was a genre in 7th century Ireland that extolled the virtues of a local saint.

First Entry in Their Majesties Bardic Competition

Their Majesties Ealdormere, Siegfried and Xristina, have challenged the people of Ealdormere to a bardic competition wherein they are to extol the virtues of a former Queen of the lupine lands.

The first to enter was Lord Dietrich von Sachsen, who performed the following song at Crown Tournament:

Iron Queen of the Northlands
by Lord Dietrich von Sachsen, to the tune of "Widow at Windsor" as sung by Peter Bellamy

Have you heard of the Queen of the Northlands,
With a gleaming gold crown on her head?
She has ships on the foam, she has servants at home,
She pays us poor beggars in red.
   (Oh, poor beggars in red!)
There's her mark on the dogs and the horses,

There's her banners a-fly in their scores,
And her sergeants you'll find with a fair wind behind
That takes us to fight in her wars
(Poor beggars! We're off to the wars!)
Then here's to the Iron Queen Adrielle,
And here's to the swords and the drums,
The men and the horses that make up her forces,
For we are the Iron Queen's sons.
(Poor beggars! The Iron Queen's sons!)

Fight now with the strength of the Iron Queen,
Whose voice shakes the kings in their thrones
And we'll bring her great fame with the sword and the flame,
And we'll salt down their land down to its bones.
(Poor beggars! -- it's blue with our bones!)
Insult not the Queen of the Northlands,
With lying and other such slop,
Even the kings must come down, and Princes doff their crowns
When the Iron Queen stands and says "Stop!"
(Poor beggars! -- we're sent to say stop!)
Then here's to the Lodge of the Northlands
From the ice to the Great Seas it runs
To the Lodge that we've tiled with the treasures we've piled
That shines like a thousand bright suns
(Poor beggars! -- It's hot in the sun!)

We have heard of the Iron Queen Adrielle
And the love of her land she has shown,
For that love we shall stand vigil over the land,
Whenever the war-horns are blown.
(Poor Beggars! And ever they're blown!)
Take hold of the Wings of the Morning,
And Fly 'till this life ye depart,
But you won't get away from the tales that they say,
Of the Iron Queen's courage and heart.
(Poor Beggars! -- stand fast and take heart!)
Then here's to Sons of the Iron Queen,
   Whenever, however they roam!
Here's all they desire and if they require
A speedy return to their home
(Poor Beggars! -- They'll always seek home!)

Ealdormere on the Rick Mercer Show

[Missive from the Kingom Media Relations Deputy]

O happy day!! Clear your evening plans friends, and mark your calendars---because we’ve all got a common TV and couch date next week! Our Rick Mercer Report episode airs:
~ Tuesday November 29th at 8:00 pm on CBC ~
The show will repeat the following Friday at 7:00 pm and will live online forever at youtube.com/mercerreport.
You’ve all been waiting eagerly for this news so it’s my great pleasure to share it with you finally. As promised, I will be shouting it from the virtual rooftops for the next few days. I will also be reaching out to Society and the other Kingdoms to give them a heads up so they can share this as well.
Promoting our episode through social media is the most important way we can maximize our reach across Canada and beyond. Our Kingdom Social Media Deputy, Lady Marrin von Waldburg, will lead this campaign for us. But I bet she would appreciate it if everyone could assist by sharing, liking, posting and re-tweeting about all of this through your own extended circles. Thank you!
In the meanwhile, I hope this news inspires a few “RMR Viewing Parties” in living rooms across Ealdormere. Please share your party selfies and pictures if so! (Tag #ealdormere or @ealdormere)

From Laurel: Job Opening - Wreath Sovereign of Arms

From Laurel: Job Opening - Wreath Sovereign of Arms

The Wreath Sovereign of Arms is an educational deputy of the Laurel Principal Sovereign of Arms, responsible for the consideration of and decisions concerning armory submitted for registration by the College of Arms.

Wreath is an unpaid position, currently requiring approximately 20 hours a week. Some knowledge of period heraldry is useful; knowledge of SCA heraldry is essential. The position requires considerable tact and patience, research and reasoning ability, a clear understanding of the Standards for Evaluation of Names and Armory and past Laurel rulings, the ability to write clearly and succinctly, the ability to work within tight deadlines and coordinate closely with Pelican, Laurel and other staff to produce a Laurel Letter of Acceptance and Return monthly, computer literacy and word processing skills, reliable e-mail and telephone access, and time and ability to travel. Given the current structure of the office, a high-speed internet connection is required.

Resumés must be sent electronically to Laurel at bids@heraldry.sca.org. Resumés must be received by Saturday, December 31, 2016, with an expected start date of February 2017, to be determined with the Laurel staff.

Comments are strongly encouraged and can be sent to:

CBC’s "Rick Mercer Report" to film at Feast of the Hare

It is my privilege to announce that CBC is sending Rick Mercer and a small production crew to film at Feast of the Hare. Rick will interact with specific volunteers and try some of our signature activities hands-on, including combat and rapier, music, dancing, and different arts and sciences. He is also expected at court, feast and the evening ball.

This is a momentous opportunity for the SCA in Canada to gain national exposure while showcasing our amazing hobby. This venture has been fully endorsed by all levels of the Society, and has the support of our Royal Family and Council. After a very long time planning, as the Kingdom’s Media Relations Deputy I am so excited to share this news with the populace!

For those of you attending Feast of the Hare please consider this your moment to shine and show your very best SCA-selves to Canada. I know I can count on the people of Skraeling Althing and Ealdormere to pull out all the stops in support of this opportunity. And to all who attend, the volunteers on camera, and everyone who helps behind the scenes, you have my gratitude!

Letter to the Barony: Coronation

Greetings unto the most noble populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.

We were thrilled to see one of Our wonderful Skraels made a champion of Their Court: The Honourable Lars Erikkson as Rapier Champion.  We are truly proud of Our fighter to be given such an honour.  Congratulations to Sir AElfwyn et Langanwuda and Lady Gwendolyn of Aldberg for receiving the King and Queen's favours. We would also like to give a very special congratulations to Skraeling Althing's newest Lady: Lady Lydia. Well deserved!

We look forward to joining many of you at Feast of the Hare in the Canton of Caldrithig.  The theme of the event this year is 'Fancy Dress', and We are looking forward to seeing the splendour of Skraels in their fancy duds.  A reminder that taxes will be due at this time.

We were very sorry to miss an amazing Feast of the Bear.  Congratulations to Skraeling Althing's newest knight: Sir AElfwyn et Langanwuda.  Congratulations also to Lady Estienne de Nantes on being awarded the Award of the Orion, and Lady Laili of Harrowgate Heath for being awarded a Maiden's Heart.

New Heraldic Acceptance Letter

Anne Cooke. Name and device. Per pale sable and Or, a sieve counterchanged.
The submitter requested authenticity for "English 1400-1600".
This exact name is found in English parish records from 1578 in the FamilySearch Historical Records, so this name meets this request.
This is the defining instance of a sieve in Society armory. A sieve is a shallow round frame with a perforated bottom. It was used by millers to separate chaff, sand, insect bodies, etc., from the flour. The sieve is found in the canting arms (Italian "crivello") of di Crivelis, mid-15th Century (Stemmario Trivulziano, plate 91), and again in the arms of Chrinelli, c.1550 (BSB Cod.Icon 272, image 211).
As documented, a sieve is depicted in trian aspect.

Off Head Helm Inspections

Under the instructions of the Society Earl Marshal, I am asking one and all to begin a round of helm inspections that would include a check of the interior padding. We should be looking for proper coverage, thickness and resilience.

This is an off head helm check.

Marshals would get a count of how many helms were inspected, how many failed and why.

This info will be included in the kingdom end of year report

If any head injuries occur, bleeding lumps, tko's or Mo's even, that they inspect the injured fighters helm and include any finding good or bad in the report sent to me.

Padding Inspectons are to the following expectations.

Do an off the head check to insure the basics that are called for in our current rules. Is the interior minimal padding present on the proper surfaces? Is it thick enough by our standard? Is any of it loose or torn or crushed and lacks the resilience we would look for in a thrusting tip? That is all I am looking for. As to old or ugly. Ask if the fighter is aware of it, and if he is satisfied with its protection. If he is, he signed his waiver. As to the frequency, I would like any events from now to Dec to include an off head inspection to get a feel as to there actually being a problem or not. Hope that clarified.

Padraig O'Riein<https://www.facebook.com/padraig.oriein>

Letter to the Barony: Summer Siege

Greetings unto the most noble populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.

It was wonderful to see many of you at Summer Siege in Our Canton of Harrowgate Heath. This was a special event for Us, as We had the privilege to witness the elevation of Mistress Alais de Poitiers to the Order of the Laurel.  The weather was fantastic, and the food was, as usual, amazing. Thank you very much to the entire team who put this event on, We had a wonderful time, and I know that many others did too.

We held Our Champion's tournaments for Thrown Weapons and Archery. We would like to announce that, for the second year in a row, Lord Daffyd ap Allen was the Thrown Weapons victor and will stand as our champion for another year. Further, Uwe of Caldrithig was our successful archery victor and has agreed to step up at Feast of the Hare to stand as our Archery Champion. We thank all who participated in the tournaments, and look forward to seeing who will compete to be our Rapier and Armoured champions at Feast of the Hare.

It was Our joy to witness so many of you receive recognition from the hands of Their Royal Majesties.  Congratulations to Lady Sorcha of Kilmongan on receiving an Award of the Maiden's Heart, and to Lord Jonas of Caldrithig, Lord Ulric the Lawless, and Lady Malandra Longwei on receiving their Award of Arms.  Waes hael, everyone!

We would take this time of transition to remind Our populace that taxes are due at Feast of the Hare, on November 5, in Our Canton of Caldrithig.

We are, at heart, an educational organization – and one of the most amazing aspects of the SCA is the amount of knowledge that is freely shared.  The theme for this year’s taxes is ‘Teaching and Learning’. We request that all members of Our populace both teach a skill they know, and learn a new one.

We look forward to hearing your tales of knowledge gained and shared.

In Service,
Shahid and Catherine
Baron and Baroness of Skraeling Althing

Sanction Guide – Corpora Changes – Request for Comments

As Corpora is the primary guide to all SCA rules and procedures and the sanction guide is subordinate to the Seneschals Handbook in terms of precedence, a change to Corpora is being considered by the Board of Directors, i.e.  deleting references to the Sanction Guide in Corpora.  This change clearly reasserts that Corpora is the primary guide to SCA rules and procedures, reduces confusion and eliminates any appearance that Corpora is subordinate to the Sanction guide.
In order to facilitate this change, the Board is presenting a proposal to the membership for commentary for removal of the following portions of Corpora dealing with references to the Sanction Guide:
Chapter I, Section F, subsection 4
Chapter X, Section C, subsections 1(b), 2(b) and 3(b).
For ease of reference a copy of the Governing Documents (Corpora) can be found here:
Commentary can be sent to comments@sca.org .  Please place the term Sanction Guide – Corpora Changes in the subject line.  The deadline for commentary is October 1, 2016.
Comments are strongly encouraged and can be sent to:
