Limp Bound Book

[The fifth--and last--paper from Lady Lucia's documentation from her Pent winning entries.]

Limp Bound Book
Lucia de Moranza
Ealdormere Pentathlon A.S. L

I took a very basic book binding class through the Guelph School of Art last fall, and the infatuation with the ability to make my own little wee journals was born. My skills are basic and my equipment is even more so and decided to turn my attempts to a limp bound book to hold A&S notes and comments in something that looks a touch more appropriate than the battered notebook that I haul around currently.

A Broken Sword Leads to Honour

Leah Raedaelf of Pagham shares a story of a magical moment from the West Kingdom's Golden Beltane event.

I do not know how to start this story, to tell of the overwhelming fullness of my heart as I sit here today and reflect on the past two weekends and the intervening week that made up the West's Golden Beltane celebration. But I have been asked for the story, and to tell it at all means to tell it all....

Two weekends ago I had the great honor of being part of the step-up of my closest friend, Yvonne, as Queen of the West. It was a day of constant running to make sure that everything was done and right and good so that her day would shine. At the end of it was the Bard of the West competition, which I entered in hopes of being the Bard again for my King and Queen on their second time on the thrones, as I was for their first reign. I was vanquished by the excellent Derilei Erica Birrell, who will serve them with grace and amazing wordcraft- as her successor, the current Bard Leofwen Jennifer Nestojko is already doing. In the intervening week, while many of the kingdom were fortunate to stay on at the campsite, I was home and working- but rueing that I would not be able to serve my King and Queen with my songs for their reign. I was wrong.

On Saturday of the second weekend of the celebration, there was a melee unit tournament held and after it had finished, Their Majesties decided to hold a short court to give a few awards and thanks. Their heralds, however, needed a few moments to prepare and suddenly I was back into my old role for Them, to provide a moment's entertainment for the assembled populace. I told the crowd of how I had once been an authorized fighter, many years ago, but that a fall from a horse had closed my fighting career on the week of the first tournament that I was ever going to get to enter after I had authorized and that I had never been able to get back into armor. Last spring, I finally gave up the lingering hope and broke apart my shield for donated parts for others to use. That experience had inspired the song that I then sang, titled Broken Sword. I knew that the song (I'll put it in the comments) had hit home to the many fighters assembled, and I was glad to have done well for my King and Queen.

The Grand Council – Its History and Activities

[Originally posted by the East Kingdom Gazette.]

At last month’s Board of Directors meeting, the Grand Council was disbanded after a little over twenty years of service to the Society. After the decision was announced, it became clear that some members of the SCA weren’t aware of the Grand Council, its history or its activities. The Gazette thought it would be useful to provide this information. Our thanks to the former Grand Council and Board members who provided the information for this article.  Without a comprehensive written record of the SCA, it took many people to recreate our own history. – Mistress Catrin o’r Rhyd For
The Grand Council was an informal committee created by the SCA’s Board of Directors in the mid-1990’s after a difficult time for the SCA. An Executive Director had been hired who wasn’t familiar with the organization, and his handling of proposed changes and the membership’s concerns were unpopular. The proposals included a “pay-to-play” policy that might have required memberships in order to fight, receive awards, hold an office, or attend events. In addition, the SCA was facing extreme financial problems, which took the membership by surprise. When members requested access to the books, the Executive Director and the SCA’s legal counsel interpreted the governing documents as not allowing members access.

The event will be celebrated in the Middle Kingdom in the State of Indiana, at the Hendricks County 4-H Fairgrounds & Conference Complex from June 16th to June 27th, 2016.

We will be attending and have registered land for the Kingdom (under Ealdormere). Opening Ceremonies will be held on Sunday June 19th. Closing Ceremonies on Saturday June 25th. There will be a Kingdom Block Party on Wednesday June 22nd.

Please drop us a note via email (northernthrones@live.com) if you are camping and have registered.
We will be sharing information as it is made available to us and will be seeking lots of ideas, help and support in the next few months. Specifically we will be seeking some assistance with the Kingdom's History display and would also ask folks to nominate persons for the Memorial Wall.
