No Fires at War of the Trillium this Year

Regarding fires at Trillies. Unfortunately conditions have grown even more dangerous over the last couple of days and we are going to have to put a ban on all campfires for the event. The grass is turning to dust as we drive on it.
To be clear, there is to be no wood burning ground nor bowl fires at all. I know that this is a great inconvenience to some groups but there will be no exceptions to this. Tended or enclosed candles are still fine. Torches are fine (propane or otherwise). If you have one of those cool propane firebowls that is fine. BBQ's, coleman stoves etc are fine.
Nothing that might throw a spark.
Along these lines, those of you that smoke, please please do not throw any butts on the ground at all.
There has been much discussion and speculation about this and nobody wants this to be the way it is but the risk to our friends' home is too great to ignore.
If there is an epic amount of rain we MAY reconsider but everyone should be prepared to go without.
If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me.
Sorry for the inconvenience

Mystic Mail will not be at Pennsic

Today Mystic Mail, which has provided Internet and Media Services at Pennsic War for many years, will not be operating at this year's war. They posted the following to their Facebook page earlier today:

Mystic Mail is very sad to announce that the Coopers no longer wish to allow us to merchant at Pennsic. It appears they will attempt to offer some internet/charging/printing service of their own.
Please share this information far and wide so that all the good gentles who have relied on our services can make other arrangements.
Thank you for your patronage over the years.

Combat Archery Update

Greetings unto the Marshals of Ealdormere
I have been thinking long and hard about the request from the Combat Archery Community to allow the use of Thin Shaft Arrows.
I respect that there is strong opinions on both sides of this issue.
At this time I have decided to allow Thin Shaft Arrows as an experimental weapon form in Ealdormere.
In regards to lack of space to use Fiberglass arrows I suggest that scenarios can be made to accommodate safety for both participants and spectators. In my opinion it is up to the Combat Archery Community to prove to all that this can be done in a safe and controlled manner.
This experiment will start after Pennsic this year 2016.
(If you are a Combat Archery Marshal or MIT I suggest you spend some time at Combat Archery Point at Pennsic this year)
As an experimental weapon form ANY TIME Thin Shaft Arrows are going to be used everybody on the field must be informed of their use. Anyone has the right not to fight when they are in use.
I will require a summary report on the use Thin Shaft Arrows after every event that uses them.

Calontir Honours Ealdormere

Today, while onsite at the SCA 50 Year Event, Her Majesty Adrielle posted the following to the Ealdormere Facebook group:

People of Ealdormere, We have most wondrous news. While on our annual pilgrimage to our sister Kingdom of Calontir [at Lillies], his Majesty and I were most honoured and humbled by Their Highnesses of Calontir Logan and Ylva who declared that at Pennsic, Calontir would not stand with the Mid or East but would declare for Ealormere. Such news brought tears to our eyes and joy to our hearts. We look forward to having our Kingdoms stand side by side against the dragon at Pennsic. Wassail Calontir! Wassail Ealdormere!
Ealdormere and Calontir have long held bonds of friendship, and this gesture is one in a long tradition of the two "sons of the dragon" showing their affection for each other.

June Missive to the Barony from Their Excellencies Skraeling Althing

Portrait taken for the Skraeling
Althing website.
Greetings unto the most noble populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron Shahid and Baroness Catherine.

Though We were not able to attend, many Skraels made the trek out to Fruits of Our Labour, to fulfill Our taxes of 'teach and learn'.  We were informed much fun was had by all, sharing both knowledge and song with Our good neighbours.

This Spring We have had the pleasure of attending Crown Tournament in the Shire of Bastille du Lac. Crown is always a very exciting event, and this one was no different.  It was wonderful and inspiring to see so many Skraels participating in the tournament. By Our count, 10 of the 24 participants were from Skraeling Althing. What am amazing showing!  After many a hard fought bout, Graf Siegfried Brandbeorn was the victor.  Many congratulations to Their Royal Highnesses Siegfried and Xristina.  It's been a long time since any of the Royal Family have been from Skrael, and I'm sure you all are as excited as We are to support one of Our own.

This past weekend, His Excellency travelled to the border lands of Petrea Thule, spending a lovely afternoon under the trees in Their Majesties Presence. It was a fun filled day with many tournaments, lots of good friends and some wonderful food. The evening's feast was assembled by the ducklings, of which Alana the Quiet, Lydia, and Saraphina the Quick were all members. Alas, His Excellency could not stay for it, but he heard through many sources that it was a wonderful feast and they did an amazing job. Their Excellencies of Septentria awarded each of them the Award of the Bear's Cub for their contribution to Septentria.

Why Service Matters

Kingdom officers swearing fealty.
Dame Asa Gormsdottir shares her thoughts on service within our Society.

When we think of the Society, we imagine brave combatants valiantly defending the honour of the Kingdom; beautiful clothes and dazzling objects made by talented artisans; glittering crowns on thrones; an arrow hitting the mark; a stately dance; sumptuous feasts; fellowship.

Yet behind each storied scene are untold acts of service, some big, many small, all essential.
Without service, there is no list bedecked with banners, no solemn Court to honour great deeds; no dainty dish to set before a king.

Without acts of service, event spaces are not found and reserved, practices can’t be run, and, more mundanely, financial and legal compliance falls apart.

Why should I serve?

Service is something that everyone can and should do, but it can be intimidating.

“I don’t know anybody.”
“I’m not on the event staff.”
“I don’t think I can do that job.”
“It’s not my problem.”

Courtesy and chivalry are two key ideals of the Society. However one chooses to define and integrate these tenets into one’s behaviour, at their heart courtesy and chivalry are about respect and obligation towards others.

Service is taking responsibility for the SCA environment we play in.
