Knitted Pouch

Lucia de Moranza
Ealdormere Pentathlon A.S. L

I have been exploring and reading about the 16th century model books, with their charted (and uncharted) patterns, and while the assumption that they were used for lace and embroidery is well established, it is unclear how much (if at all) they were used for knitting. I decided to see how well suited some of the charted patterns might work, both a small repeating pattern and a larger motif pattern might work in a knitted pouch, especially after falling in love with the griffon that I’d already embroidered on my sampler. He simply had to be knit up for comparison. The griffon pattern came from Federic Vinciolo’s "Singvliers Et Novveaux Povrtraicts", first published in 1587, this is from the 1606 edition. The little curlicue stripe came from Giovanni Ostaus’ “La Vera Perfezione del Disegno”, 1561. Both patterns have been included in Appendix 1. The little X stripe wasn’t from a pattern, it’s just little X’s.

Grand Council Disbanded

Yesterday, the Society Seneschal announced that the Grand Council had been disbanded:

The Grand Council was formed in 1994; a time before email and social media.  There was a need then for a committee that made sure that the membership had a way to communicate with the directors on issues of importance to the SCA.  Twenty years later, members have access to the Internet and with it direct lines of communication to the directors and Corporate officers.  We know we still have problems receiving input from, and transmitting information to, the membership; but we don’t think an intermediary body provides us with the solution to these problems today.
So with thanks for the long and faithful service of the Grand Council, we have decided to disband the committee and work on new methods and approaches for increasing our responsiveness to the members of the SCA.
Society President John Fulton, Director Richard Sherman, and Director Andrew Coleman have been directed to investigate the creation of a new vehicle to facilitate communication between the membership and the directors that recognizes and utilizes the changes in technology, demographics and culture that have changed the way the Society conducts business in the 22 years since creation of the Grand Council.
Board of Directors, SCA Inc

The Grand Council was an advisory committee that provided proposals and ideas to the Board of directors. You can read more about the Council on the Council website.

Pent vs. Pent

[This article was originally posted on Lady Lucia de Moranza's blog.]
As a warning, this post is going to be long, light on pictures, and heavy on process geekery. I won’t be offended if you skip reading it. (Heck,  I won’t even know!)
In a moment of brilliance (or stupidity), I determined that I could take my 5 entries from Ealdormere’s Pentathlon and turn around and enter them into Aethelmaerc’s pentathlon at Ice Dragon two weeks later. I wanted to compare as directly as possible, so no change in documentation, no change in project state (other than the bread. I did bake new bread.)
The two experiences were very very different.

New Wording Regarding Gate Fees for Events

The SCA has just announced the following on the SCA website:

Non-Member Surcharge is now Member Discount

After much research and consideration it has been decided to replace the term “Non-Member Surcharge” with “Member Discount” for SCA use.
With this change, it is important for everyone to know that Child Registration Fees will not go up in view of the “Member Discount”.  We are not assessing $5 for children who do not have a membership.   If under the old fee structure, the site fee was $15 for adults with $5 NMS and $5 for children under 16, then the NEW nomenclature would be as follows:
Adult Event Registration;  $20, Adult Member Discount Event Registration $15, Children (specify the age range) Registration Fees (less at least $5 or more than the member price) Youth (specify the age and under) free.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Society Exchequer, Corporate Treasurer or myself.

Regards,
A.J. Pongratz
Vice President of Operations, SCA Inc.
