Format for Crown Tourney of Edward and Rylyn Announced

Greetings to the People of Ealdormere from Prince Edward and Princess Rylyn,
At the Kingdom moot at War of the Trilliums we had a great deal of discussion about participation in Crown Tournaments. This is fortuitous, as the time has come when We must start planning for Our Crown Tournament in the Fall.
To that end, We would call upon every fighter in Ealdormere to think upon Crown Tournament to be held in the Barony of Rising Waters in November of this year. In Ealdormere, fighters and their consorts think long and hard about the burdens of the Crown and take this responsibility very seriously. While We applaud this careful consideration, it is also one of Our major goals for this tournament that We get to see more people involved. We believe that we have devised a format to do just that, and We will need the assistance of many of you, even if you choose not to compete in the tournament.
As is Traditional, We would now call upon all those wishing to compete in this Crown tournament to put forth their letter of intent. Please see below in Our letter, as well as Our Seneschal's letter for requirements.

Court of Their Majesties Ealdormere. Pennsic War 2017

An account of the Court of Their Majesties, Quilliam Rex and Tangwystl the Queene held within the Great Hall at the 46th Pennsic War in the Debatable Lands.
THL Mannic was called into court and brought forth the Ealdormere War Standard. As is tradition, the standard is given to one who had shown prowess upon the field, to fly in his or her camp until the next battle. Baron Richard Larmer was called forward to receive the banner for safekeeping for his actions within the Allied Champions battle earlier that day.
Their Majesties invited Master Ruslan to come forward. He had heard tales of the elevation of Duchess Kaylah to the Orders of Defense and Pelican at in the same ceremony earlier this year, but had been unable to attend. He called her forward to receive a medallion, which he had to go back to his seat to fetch. He dragged forward a heavy disk, the size of a shield, to great amusement, and bestowed it upon Her Grace.

Ealdormere Battlefield Court, Pennsic

An account of the Court of Their Majesties Quilliam Rex and Tangwystl the Queene, held upon the battlefield at the 46th Pennsic War within the Debatable Lands
Their Majesties instructed their rapier fighters to assemble and present themselves before Their Majesties William and Isolde of the Middle Kingdom, who opened Their Court. Warder Andreas Blacwode, premier of the Order of the Bronze Ring, then begged a boon of Their Majesties. Andreas had not had the opportunity to fight for Queen Tangwystl when she had once ruled in the Middle, but he had done so on this day, and seen the fighters of the Wolf serve as the teeth of the Dragon. Their Majesties William and Isolde were in agreement, and the rapier fighters of Ealdormere were given the Award of the Dragon's Teeth. It is to be noted that the armoured fighters of the fledgeling Principality of Ealdormere, with Tangwystl as its first Princess, were one of the first two groups to receive this award in AS 25.
Returning to the Ealdormere presence upon the field, Their Majesties asked Duchess Kaylah to relate some of the deeds of valour done that day. Several deeds were mentioned, most particularly the work of THL Lars Erikson in serving as rapier commander. She then begged a boon and asked that Lars be elevated to the Order of Defence. Court was opened, the candidate was called forward. After hearing words of support from Sir Baldric, Master Albrecht (read by Her Majesty in absentia), Mistress Eyrny, and Prince Edward, Lars was immediately elevated to the Order of Defense, swearing his oath of fealty on the hereditary sword of the Order.
Recorded by Nicolaa Rouge Estoile, acting as herald to Their Majesties.

Greeting unto all known world archers and archery marshals, from Master Godric of Hamtun Pennsic Archery Coordinator.
It is very apparent that there is a need to have the archery range at Pennsic Officially staff during peace week as Pennsic has truly become a full two week event. So, In consultation with the Pennsic archery leaders. Pennsic archery is pleased to make the following announcement:
"A portion of the archery range will be officially open on Aug 2, 3, 4 (Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday) From 11 am to 3 pm each day. This is just for practice and Royal Rounds, no war points will be shot during these additional hours. These peace week hours will allow more archery fun for all.
To all archery marshals, we will need marshals to help staff these additional 6 two hour shifts. We would need a minimum of 4 marshal each shift. If you can, please consider volunteering some of your time to make this new change happen.

Royal Court Report: War of the Trillium 2017

An account of the courts of Their Majesties Quilliam Rex and Tangwystl the Queene at Trillium War, the first day of July in the year of the Society LII.
Court was opened upon the field in the early afternoon as the Barbarian who could not be found at Murder Melee was spotted beside the listfield. Tannin was called forward by Their Majesties and presented with a jar of dirt. A hide was unfolded bearing writing that explained that said Tannin was being created a Baron of the Court, and that said jar bore the land over which he has dominion, and wherever a little of it be scattered, that would be considered his lands. Also set out were terms of tithes of livestock, gold, and drink to Their Majesties and the Baron of Ben Dunfirth. He was invested with a coronet of bone to confirm his new station.
Court was reopened in the evening after a delay due to the local weather deities.
The Ealdormere Waits were summoned forward. Master Martin indicated that this group of musicians now had proper registered heraldry and that a charter had been presented to Their Majesties for their signature. The charter was produced, already signed and sealed, and was read into the record. With the charter accepted by Master Martin, the Waits departed, but Her Majesty indicated that one Jamie fitz Mordain, a dancer, did not have leave to depart. Several members of the Queen's Rapier Guard surrounded him to ensure he stayed. It seemed that reports of his activities, such as dancing in church on Sundays, occupying the time of the Caldrithig musicians with his research, and other such deeds had been reported, and such were confirmed by Master Martin, Mistress Emma, and Mistress Marie. It seemed that the only remedy for such a troublemaker was to beg a boon for him to be admitted to the Order of the Laurel for his dance research and teaching. Their Majesties agreed that this was a right and proper thing, and a writ was read out that he might sit his vigil and be duly elevated in the Great Hall in the Debatable Lands at Pennsic.

Marshal's Point at Pennsic Seeks Volunteers

Marshals survey the action. Pennsic 2016.
According to a post in the East Kingdom Marshal Rules & Clarifications group on Facebook, Marshal's Point at Pennsic this year is sorely in need of volunteers:

This year Marshal's Point is going to need more help than normal. If you're going to help, please plan on spending a few hours at the point helping. If everybody does 3 hours the burden won't be put too heavily on anybody. The work will be weighted toward the beginning of war week. Spread the word to other groups, please.

Archive of Newsletters Needs new Home

A missive from Maister Colyne Stewart, as posted to several Facebook groups:

For several years now I have been collecting every SCA newsletter or magazine that I could get my hands on. However, I am afraid that I no longer have the space for the amassed archive (it takes up 4 or 5 plastic totes). Therefore I am looking for someone to pass these treasures on to. If you are interested in giving this small library of our past a new home, please let me know.
A partial list of the collection's contents are here.

If you can house this collection, please contact Maister Colyne.

As this is the 40th anniversary of the founding of Skraeling Althing. Our dream is to collect a history of stories from Our Barony, both past and present.

Letter to Skraeling Althing: Coronation

Greetings unto the noble populace of Skraeling Althing from Baron and Baroness Shahid and Catherine.
We were honoured to participate in the coronation of Their Royal Majesties, Quilliam and Tangwystl. It truly was a spectacle of Elizabethan proportions. There, we were well pleased to witness not one, but two royal courts in which Skraels were honoured.  Tears of both joy and sadness were shed as The Honourable Lady Lucie Peltiere was inducted posthumously into the Order of the Crucible. Congratulations to Lady Dubhessa Ni Uilliam on receiving an Award of the Maiden’s Heart, and to Lord Ian MacDougall of Skye and Lord Joffr Rödson on receiving Awards of the Orion. Congratulations also to Lord Paddy O’Connor on receiving his Award of Arms and David the Younger his Wolf’s Cub.  Special congratulations to the Caldrithig Choir and Instrumental Group on being named Musicians of Their Majesties Chapel Royal, and listed on the Scroll of Honour. Wassail everyone!
During Our court, We welcomed Baron Amelius Claudius Rattanicus as a Friend of the Hare, and the Honourable Lady Pesha (called Gypsy) as Our Baronial Arts & Sciences Champion.
We always love hearing about the good things people are doing in this Barony. We would encourage anyone who feels a gentle is deserving of an award, either Kingdom or Baronial, to please write them in. Skraeling Althing has an online form here, and the Ealdormere form is here.

Court Report: FOOL 2017

An account of the Court of Her Majesty, Tangwystl the Queene, held within the Barony of Ramshaven at Fruits of our Labours, the 20th day of May in the fifty-second year of the Society.
After opening Court, Her Majesty received the procession of Baron Penda and Baroness Sibylla of Ramshaven, and invited them to hold their Court. After dismissing their Champions, Their Excellencies closed their court for the final time and presented themselves before Her Majesty. After presenting Her with a rod symbolizing the Barony of Ramshaven, Their Excellencies were released from fealty by Her Majesty, who received their coronets into safekeeping. It was announced that the lands of Ramshaven had reverted to the Crown. Before they departed, Her Majesty asked whether they had successors to recommend to the Crown, and they gave the names of Penn de Moranza and Lucia de Moranza. Her Majesty gave them leave to depart as the populace stood and applauded, but they were stopped on the way out by Laura Battista, who demanded that Sybila hand over one last piece of regalia. Before handing over the ram's horn, Sybilla blew one last long, clear note on it.

Fourth Entry in Their Majesties' Bardic Competition

Their Majesties Ealdormere, Siegfried and Xristina, have challenged the people of Ealdormere to a bardic competition wherein they are to extol the virtues of a former Queen of the lupine lands.

The fourth entry was by Lady Inge of Sten Mark, who presented the following song for five voices at Kingdom A&S:

Inge's Notes:

[Come, Sweet Nymphs] is a canzonet (canzonetta) in the style of Thomas Morley (1558-1603). Morley also called his canzonets "little short aer"s. Essentially these canzonets are lighter, short madrigals.

They are frequently pastoral in subject matter, and in England, always secular. They also frequently have rude undertones: the words, are completely and innocently pastoral when read on a surface level, but usually imply rude activities between the shepherds and nymphs when analyzed on a deeper level.

Another feature of a number of canzonets/madrigals at the time was including tributes to Elizabeth I. Frequently, she was compared to Diana, and this was rhymed with Oriana, or Gloriana in the last verse of the canzonet. Often, her virtues are sung at the end of a pastoral piece eg. Long live fair Oriana. (from “Hard by a crystal fountain", by T. Morley.)

The lyrics to these pieces are often in tetrameter, with rhymed couplets.

Poem: Two Harps

Photo of Master Naon's shadow as he played
Golden Singer. Photo by Baron Duncan.
By Baron Duncan Gabh MacLeod

A poem about Master Naon and his harp, the Golden Singer.

A harper and harp maker, devout of Hern
A Lady, A Widow, who loved harp song
Asked for a harp to learn the harp’s song
Paid with good silver, the Harper of Hern

The Harper and harp maker, chose of wood
Of oak, Of birch, who’s grain ran strong
Lines so clean to free the harp’s song
Strung with fine strings, make sing the harp’s wood

Now the Harper loved music, shared with us all
But good tools he had not, so he borrowed the lot
From a man that he called friend, and trusted a lot
But the man was jealous and wanted it all

The Harper and harp maker fashioned the Harp
Cutting the wood and smoothing all sides
Then gluing and stringing the Harp from inside
And placing inside it the song of the Harp

But the man was deceitful and callous and vain
And he cut his own wood and copied the Harp
He strung his with strings and but hid his false harp
In the false copy no voice had been lain

A harper and harp maker, devout of Hern
First played the harp and its voice was clear
Any who set free her voice would hold it dear
And he gave to the Lady the Harp made with Hern

Now the harp made in the dark of night
Was made without honour or joy of art
But without honour this harp had no heart
And the harp had no voice, no joy, no might

The Lady, The Widow, who loved harp song
Her fingers were not nimble but stiff and old
And she returned the Harp, lest it grow cold
But she had covered the Harp with paint of Gold!!!

Now the Harper and Harp maker, devout of Hern
Was almost in tears in fear and dismay
But he sat down and on the Harp did play
And the voice of the Harp sang out of Hern

The harp of deceit hangs on a wall
It brings no joy to harper or man
The man called friend is called no more
Its voice never filled any hall

The Golden Singer, the Harp of Hern
Has the voice of two harps loud and clear
And sings of joy and loves both far and near
And a now past Harper devout of Hern
